Your Brown + Hudson Bespoke South African Experience begins with a toast in the exclusive Star Alliance lounge in London Heathrow before you board your South African Airways flight to Johannesburg. After a seamless check in, it’s time to relax and enjoy the 11 hour flight. As the country’s national carrier you’ll enjoy world-class service with on demand entertainment and some of South Africa’s fines food and wine.
After touch down in Johannesburg you take a VIP transfer to the North-west province of the Madikwe Game Reserve, bordering Botswana. Nestled amid 185,000 acres is the beautiful Morukuru Family Reserve, voted Best Luxury Lodge in South Africa for the second year running. Its colonial exterior blends seamlessly into the surrounding land whilst the interior design oozes unabashed, modern luxury: enjoy a decadent safari experience with a private butler and personal chef in the Owner’s House.
Over two nights spent in the Morukuru Family Reserve your personal tracker and guide will teach you all about the resident game and over 350 bird species. Spend an afternoon Rhino Darting, personally helping plant microchips in their horns and marking their ears for future identification. After you return take a dip in the infinity pool and laze about with Sundowners. After all, the Morukuru concept is all about doing as much or as little as you wish.
Catch your BBQ lunch with a morning’s fishing in the Marico River, before lounging on a peaceful riverside bank. Enjoy cocktails at sunset watching elephants splashing in the waterhole from The Morukuru Hide. For the adventurous then the Hide can be transformed it into a Sleep-out haven, adorned with lanterns and nets for a night under the stars!
In the morning you transfer to the malaria free Eastern Cape and Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, which spans a mighty 54,000 acres. It is home to Lions, Cheetah, Elephants, Buffalo and Rhinos and thanks to its conservation programme, many endangered species too such as the world’s smallest wild feline - the Black Footed Cat - and South Africa’s national bird the Blue Crane after which it is named.
Here you will spend 3 nights at the reserve’s Great Fish River Lodge whose splendid setting high up on a steep bank overlooks the river. You will stay in a luxurious suite with your own private plunge pool and uninterrupted views of the wilderness from the viewing deck. Here, on game drives and walking safaris, expert rangers and trackers will lead you into the bush in search of the ‘Big Five’ and the more elusive Cape Grysbok and Leopard. One game drive here is particularly special: we have arranged for one of the winners of the BBC Veolia Photographer of the Year 2012, Frits Hoogendijk’s to give you an infield wildlife photography masterclass.
Kwandwe’s Angus Gillis Foundation is a non-profit, charitable trust that has become the heart and soul of the reserve and the key to responsibly managed tourism to South Africa’s wildlife conservancy. Connect with some of the 200 locals that live and work with an afternoon volunteering in the community centre.
Leaving the wilds of the bush behind, you transfer to the beautiful 5* Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate. Situated in the Franschhoek Valley, just an hour from Cape Town, it is surrounded by 47 acres of lush vines and dramatic mountains. You will be staying in The Owner’s Cottage and over two nights enjoy award winning cuisine and wines in one of South Africa’s finest dining venues. The Gallery is the Estate’s contemporary art space and Brown + Hudson has arranged for you to meet one of the Gallery’s artists in a private morning tour. There is also an afternoon wine tasting with an acclaimed South African wine maker and a private dinner in the Estate grounds, under a starry sky.
Brown + Hudson’s Bespoke South African Experience ends with a scenic drive back through the sumptuous countryside of Franschhoek to Cape Town. Here your driver and guide will hand you back into the safe hands of South African Airways for your flight back home.
The Safari competition is now closed. Congratulations to Isobel Warren who has been declared the winner!
